Yoga FAQs
Why should I choose Kula as my yoga studio?
Kula is a community that is created and nurtured through the practice of yoga. Expect to be warmly welcomed, accommodated and seen. Teachers are highly-trained and will expertly lead you through their classes, yet are approachable, authentic and humble. You will see the “real” teacher which allows you to be your “real” self – perfectly imperfect!
What should I wear?
Wear comfortable, snug-fitting clothing. Layer a shirt that covers your underarms for aerial yoga classes. No zippers, hoods or sharp/dangling jewelry.
Do I need to bring anything?
We use yoga mats for all classes, even aerial. We have everything you need for all classes, but you can bring your own mat/props if you’d like.
What’s the minimum age to take classes at kula?
16 for floor classes (practicing with an adult) and 18 for aerial. The exception to this is setting up a private party or class. 8 is the minimum age for a floor class and 10 is the minimum for aerial in a private class or party.
Do I need to sign up for class or can I just show up?
Yes – registration is required for all classes at kula. With classes like aerial – space is very limited. For chair yoga, we need to know how many chairs to set up. For all classes, the teachers want to know who is planning to attend so they can tailor their class plans to best suit the yogis attending.
Should I eat before class?
Coming hungry or overly full/right after eating feels terrible no matter the class. Eat about 1 hour before your class time and include some protein.
How early should I arrive?
Doors open 15 minutes before class – give yourself time to arrive, set up, and be ready for class to begin.
I’m on the waitlist for class – how does that work?
Classes may have a waitlist (especially aerial!). If you are on the waitlist, you will receive an email up to 45 minutes before class start time if you have been added to the class (someone else has cancelled and spot has opened for you). If you cannot longer attend the class, please cancel yourself ASAP so someone else has a chance to join class. The waitlist locks 45 minutes before a class starts, to allow time for yogis to get to the studio. If you have not received an email by this time, no space is available.
I can no longer attend a class I’ve signed up for, what should I do?
Please cancel as soon as you know that you are unable to attend a class you have signed up for. This will allow someone on the waitlist the opportunity to be added to class, as well as let the teacher know who to plan on in class. Per the cancellation policy: If you cancel less than 1 hour before a class or are a “no-show”, you may be charged a cancellation fee.
I’m going to be late arriving for class, will I get in?
Probably not. If you are signed up for class, teachers will usually hold the door for 2-3 minutes if they are expecting you (another reason you must sign up for classes ahead of time). Most of the time, there is no one at the desk during classes, so the door will be locked shortly after class start for the safety and security of everyone and their belongings. You can try to call the studio, but likely the phone will not be heard (or texts not read) in the minutes leading up to class start time.
I’m not feeling 100%, should I still come to class?
Please don’t! For the health and wellness of our yogis and staff, please stay home if you are unwell. Most classes have an online option to practice from home and you can easily switch yourself from in-studio to online in your profile. Just make sure you make the switch more than 15 minutes before class so you receive the zoom link. You will not be charged for the “late cancel” from the in-studio class.
What can I expect?
Come with an open mind and willing to give something new a try! Whether it’s aerial yoga or a floor class, expectations lead to disappointment! You are never expected to try or do it all.
What makes Aerial Yoga at Kula different?
A long, but needed answer! First: SAFETY! Aerial yoga is an expensive offering to have in a studio and the most expensive and most important corners are often cut. If you are not made aware of the structural engineering, ratings of ALL the aerial rigging components and rigging professionals used before you take a class….RUN (and certainly don’t put your body in an aerial hammock!). Second: A prerequisite requirement is a MUST. For your safety as well as the teachers, it is imperative that you have been instructed through the fundamental postures that require your body weight fully suspended in the fabric. Also, if the studio is adequately insured (another high expense that is often skipped….) it is likely a requirement of that policy to require and prove that attendees have taken a prerequisite course. Third: TRAINING. There are many inferior (i.e. “learn to teach aerial yoga in a weekend”) trainings around as well as many teachers who believe since they have been participating as a student, they have the skills needed to teach. Our teachers are rigorously trained through Unnata Aerial Yoga, whose founder and creator Michelle has spent over 40 years developing an aerial yoga practice that is deeply rooted in the traditional floor yoga practice. It may be fun to be upside down, but do you know why we do it? You will in a comprehensive class at kula designed from the floor yoga practice UP to the aerial hammock. No gimmicks, tricks or flips here – this is a true aerial YOGA practice that is beneficial, and sustainable for those who choose to practice with us. Lastly: In addition to a lengthy, top-notch training, Unnata Aerial teachers are required to participate in continued education to keep their certification, have access to online resources and direct contact with Michelle throughout their time as an active teacher. Be safe and informed when choosing your studio!
